THE AEDES DE VENUSTAS STORY CONTINUES

AEDES DE VENUSTAS is turning a new page in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story with the relaunch of the perfume collection in November 2021

The relaunch begins with a reintroduction of seven of the existing fragrances: its first, Signature (2012), Iris Nazarena (2013), Copal Azur (2014), Palissandre d’Or (2015), Cierge de Lune (2016), Grenadille d’Afrique (2016), and Pelargonium (2017).

The finished works are presented in a re-designed fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story. The particular peacock blue shade is a nod to the original location of AEDES PERFUMERY onChristopher Street, the birthplace of the brand and so much of its ethos.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS honors the past, present and future of perfumery with its signature scent, aptly named SIGNATURE Eau de Parfum. The first fragrance to come from the AEDES DE VENUSTAS brand in 2012 breaks out of traditional perfume structures, offering an olfactory reflection that embodies the spirit of the famed boutique in which it was born.

“The AEDES DE VENUSTAS world is a world of luxury, of quality; simultaneously opulent and baroque yet decadent in a way that is refined”, says perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, who worked with AEDES DE VENUSTAS and AEDES PERFUMERY founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl on SIGNATURE. He cites the original store’s beloved interiors”the use burgundy and aubergine jewel tones, shimmering and iridescent finishes like those of peacock feathers, and textures expressed in velvet, angel-skin-like silk, taffetas and brocades, as references to construct a scent that is both modern and decadent.

The composition of AEDES DE VENUSTAS SIGNATURE Eau de Parfum is a world unto itself: There is no trace of the traditional fragrance pyramid. Instead, the construction is baroque yet futuristic; a round, luxurious, and voluptuous work. Duchaufour describes the perfume as “a game of supports,” an improbable architecture whereby ephemeral green rhubarb increases over time while a dark, resinous incense and chypre accord recedes, becoming more abstract. This interplay between freshness and depth is the axis around which the fragrance revolves, much like the wearer, who emanates its memorable sillage.

In addition to rhubarb and incense, notes include tomato leaf, red currant, honeysuckle, vetiver, and hazelnut. Duchaufour sources many of the raw materials himself, traveling around the world to work with farmers on sustainable and fair trade compliant practices. In SIGNATURE, the vetiver was sourced by him from Madagascar.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS SIGNATURE has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

With SIGNATURE, the mind questions, but the heart knows. To wear it is to cast a sensuous spell that captivates like no other before it. It is the first touch of AEDES DE VENUSTAS, completely immersing its wearer in a simultaneous revolution of all that has come before and all that has yet to materialize.

Notes: Rhubarb, vetiver, red berries, tomato leaf, incense, green apple, hazelnut, honeysuckle.

Iris Nazarena - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

The most precious and the most ancient aromatic materials come together for a scent that moves perfumery into the future by going to its roots.

The iris holds a precious position in the world of perfumery: Its prices soar beyond gold and its singular aroma cannot be experienced for six years after planting. In AEDES DE VENUSTAS IRIS NAZARENA, the rare floral root is reborn. It is huddled in conversation with incense, resulting in a mysterious and sensuous iris-incense accord that drives this deeply captivating perfume.

The perfumer Ralf Schwieger had long wanted to offer a contemporary interpretation of iris without referencing its most well-known olfactive expressions, particularly Chanel N°19, which he calls “the benchmark of iris-based scents and an unsurpassed template since its launch in 1971.” He also wanted to incorporate transparency into notes that can be seen as somber, and end with something that would express a beauty that is both mystical and enduring.

IRIS NAZARENA is named for the rare species Iris Bismarckiana, which is also known as Iris Nazarena because it grows mainly in the mountains east of Nazareth. The uncanny beauty of the blossom, with its brown or purple spots and delicate, bluish-purple veins, seduced Karl Bradl as soon as he discovered it on a postcard. It became the muse of the second AEDES DE VENUSTAS scent when it launched in 2013.

The flower itself does not give off a scent. Most irises don’t. Instead it is the root, or rhizome, that has become revered in perfumery. To turn it into an aromatic material, the flower must grow for three years before being uprooted. Then it is left to dry for another three years before developing its characteristic note, a mix of powder and wood and violet. It is then ground and distilled. Only after this time and labor-intensive process is the majestic iris resurrected, a journey that reflects the history of the land where the Iris Nazarena grows.

The suede-soft petals of the mystical iris muse are sketched in a subtle sfumato of brown, purple and white. Ambrette sheds the tender light of dawn on the top notes, rose adds a touch of floral sensuality, and the cool, vivid green of star anise conjures the stylized stems and leaves of the flower. Resinous juniper berry, patchouli and vetiver allude to its roots, driven into dark earth and rock, while the sacred smoke rising from the altars weaves its mineral, leather-scented tendrils throughout the development with clove, oud and incense. Incense is an olfactory thread that runs through much of the AEDES DE VENUSTAS collection. This millennia-old burnt offering to the gods is at the very origin of perfumery, since the word “perfume” itself springs from the Latin per fumare, which translates to “through smoke.”

Notes: Iris, incense, ambrette, juniper berry, star anise, leather, oud, clove, Rose de Mai, woods, musk and vetiver.

Perfumer: Ralf Schwieger

Copal Azur - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

Suave clouds of burning copal whirling over Tulum inspire a beachy scent like no other.

Mayan incense rising from age-old temples. Lashes of sea spray and whiffs of the jungle where the jaguar lurks. AEDES DE VENUSTAS COPAL AZUR exhales the lush, spiritual vibes of sacred Tulum.

The Mayan incense copal is the muse of COPAL AZUR, brought to life by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour in 2014, who also authored AEDES DE VENUSTAS first scent, SIGNATURE. Incense is an olfactory thread that runs through much of the AEDES DE VENUSTAS collection. This millennia-old burnt offering to the gods is at the very origin of perfumery, since the word “perfume" itself springs from the Latin per fumare, which translates to “through smoke.” Who better than Duchaufour to whisk incense from the church into the seaside jungle?

Strikingly similar to frankincense, copal, whose name means “incense” in Nahuatl, can be extracted from a variety of trees native to Central and South America. And much like frankincense in Ancient Egypt or Greece, it was burned by the Mayans and Aztecs to “feed" the gods. Today, it is still used in Mexico for spiritual purposes.  Since copal resin cannot be used as a perfume ingredient, three different extractions of frankincense are used to conjure it from top to base notes, making up an extravagant 30% of the formula.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS co-founder Karl Bradl was drawn to its scent while cycling on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula through copal-laced air towards the natural reserve of Sian Kaâ’an, which translates as “Gate to Heaven."

Just as the Mayan citadel looms over Tulum’s lush beachside paradise, a steep, mineral cliff of incense dominates the olfactory landscape of COPAL AZUR. Ozonic and salty notes call to mind the Caribbean Sea and the local cenotes, the subterranean fresh-water pools that dot the Yucatan Peninsula. A flash of green references lush Mexican jungles, cardamom peeks through the wet, woody undergrowth of patchouli and myrrh, and a touch of almond-scented tonka bean and amber, for the Jaguar God of Terrestrial Fire, reference the roundness of the copal and the burning of its embers. COPAL AZUR is hypnotic, spiritual and forceful, a wildly transporting perfume with an iconoclastic expression of incense at its core.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS COPAL AZUR has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

Notes: Copal, ozone, salt, frankincense, resin, cardamom, patchouli, myrrh, tonka bean, amber

Palissandre d'Or - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

A symphony of fine-grained burnished woods spin into a smoothly opulent perfume.

There is a new light on the immemorial scent of precious woods with PALISSANDRE D'OR, which arrives in a smoldering palette of burnt sienna, lacquered red and molten gold.

The idea grew from a rosewood tree, also known as Dalbergia sissoo, which has historically been the primary rosewood species of northern India. Another type of rosewood, “palisander,” redolent of intricate carvings and serene Asian groves, provided the path to inspiration. “I can’t make overly figurative fragrances," perfumer Alberto Morillas explains. “To me, a perfume is a melody.”

His 2015 interpretation is a milky light, glowing-through-wood so polished it turns into silk. Abstract yet intensely evocative, PALISSANDRE D’OR expresses the quintessence of Alberto Morillas’ style, defined by the master in three words: “Fluidity, transparency and power.”

In this dazzling olfactory marquetry, crystal-clear ambrette, a natural musk with rose, pear and iris facets, brightens rich inlays of cool spices pink pepper, coriander and nutmeg. As an intense heat of cinnamon rises, the scent opens up its heart to deliver its secret: a rare sandalwood extract from Sri Lanka. Subtly smoky, rose-tinged and creamy, it is made more luscious still by the milky warmth of copahu balm and a silken patchouli extract. The scent of ambrox, an intriguing fusion of warm, clean bark and sun-kissed skin, embeds its delicate motifs wherever it is sprayed.

In addition, a bold trio of cedar essences add structure and texture to the lustrous blend. Clean, bracing Virginian cedar gives it vigor and tempo. The Lapsang Souchong tea facet of Chinese cedar brings subtlety and Alaskan cedar brings a Russian leather smokiness. “It is a ‘monochrome' by its color and its density with a strong signature and very special, bold ingredients,” says Morillas. “But it's still very wearable and full of facets that can resonate differently on different skin.”

AEDES DE VENUSTAS PALISSANDRE D’OR has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

Serene and mystical, PALISSANDRE D’OR is a journey into the quintessence of wood.

Notes: Sandalwood, Virginian, Chinese & Alaskan cedar, coriander, copahu, ambrette, pink pepper, patchouli, nutmeg, cinnamon.

Grenadille d'Afrique - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

A tribute to ancient African Blackwood and its majestic home.

From crackling sap to balmy resin. Smoky wood to sun-seared stone. Purple dusk to ink-black night. GRENADILLE D’AFRIQUE expresses not only its namesake tree, but also the primal landscape in which it grows.

“It is a surprising, uncompromising and emotional scent”, perfumer Alberto Morillas explains. “The materials are simple, stark and unadorned. It is through this density and simplicity that the fragrance turns into art."

It begins at the African Blackwood tree, a rare, costly member of the rosewood family whose Latin name, Dalbergia melanoxylon, translates to “black wood.” The title belies the range of its wood, which moves from deep purple to brownish black and is also known as grenadilla. The Ancient Egyptians, who called it h’bny, fashioned precious furniture from its heartwood. In Tanzania, the Makonde people, who know it as mpingo, use it to create spectacular, highly prized Tree of Life carvings.

In 2016’s GRENADILLE D'AFRIQUE, Alberto Morillas turns it into an arrestingly elegant olfactory sculpture. Run through from twigs to roots with aromatic, juniper-scented sap, the mythical African Blackwood tree is built around a “trunk" of Haitian vetiver. With its complex facets of wood, smoke, earth and flint, it is the vertical axis that draws together the fragrance’s vegetal, animal and mineral notes.

At first breath, it's hard to say if the perfume places you in dusk or dawn. Sparkling bergamot captures the last rays of the sun, while a purple haze of lavender and violet spill their powdery moonlight on the savannah grasslands. Further in its life, vanilla, turned into combustible resin by a lash of ambery cistus labdanum, exudes a balsamic warmth. Bleached wood, skin-soft bark and sun-heated stone release the day’s heat into the ink-black night, cooled off by a breeze of musk.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS GRENADILLE D'AFRIQUE has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

Morillas describes his creation as “fossilized wood rubbed in a vanilla accord,” a strongly contrasted composition that sets its dark heart off with luminous notes. GRENADILLE D’AFRIQUE explores a new region in the scent-map, where woods and resins meet ink and stone.

Notes: African blackwood accord, vetiver, cistus labdanum, juniper, vanilla, bergamot, lavender, violet.

Cierge de Lune - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

A flowering cactus sets the tone for this raw, glamorous take on the dark side of vanilla.

Cool and limpid as moonlit desert air. Velvety and sensuous as the midnight sky. CIERGE DE LUNE is inspired by the scent of the mysterious night-blooming cereus flowering cactus, also known as the Queen of the Night.

The French call cereus cierge de lune, “moon altar candle,” a literal translation of the Latin Selenicereus grandiflorus. Since its spectacular flower only opens after dark and wilts as the sun rises, it is said that Marie-Antoinette summoned the botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté at midnight to capture the New World cactus species’ poignantly fleeting beauty. Today, AEDES DE VENUSTAS co-founder Karl Bradl and perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin capture the suave scent of this elusive and evocative muse.

CIERGE DE LUNE spans a thrilling range, from crystalline high notes to a deep nocturnal purr of spicy vanilla laced with wisps of incense. For his first collaboration with AEDES DE VENUSTAS in 2016, Pellegrin drew from a rich portfolio. “Our Madagascan vanilla absolute is the truest to the natural ingredient,” he explains. Woodier and more ambery than its Tahitian counterpart with a tinge of tawny leather, this vanilla forms the heart of the composition, revealing a darker side. An airy waft of hedione transmutes the delectable pod into a cactus blossom, its pristine petals fleshed out by ylang-ylang.

To add vibrancy and brightness, twinkling pink pepper shoots glints of moonlight into the velvety blend, while black pepper runs an intriguing thread, from mineral, incense-like effects—a nod to the olfactory theme of the AEDES DE VENUSTAS line—to resinous, smoky, dark chocolate notes. Then, in a final metamorphosis, musky ambrox, underscored by a downy suede accord, turns the nocturnal bloom into a dusky second skin.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS CIERGE DE LUNE has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

CIERGE DE LUNE takes you on an olfactory journey deep into the desert. A rare, regal bloom reinterpreted for your skin.

Notes: Crystalline accord, Madagascar vanilla absolute, ylang-ylang, pink and black peppers, ambrox, suede, incense, musk.

Pelargonium - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

A contemporary baroque take on geranium highlights the raw grace of the prized olfactive material.

A strikingly elegant still life in scent, PELARGONIUM portrays its namesake ingredient like one of the mysterious floral compositions of Dutch Golden Age paintings.

“My aesthetic inspiration was an old-school flower everyone thinks they know, even though no one really knows it," says perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer, who draws geranium from the depths of the fragrance pyramid to display its complex facets, using freshly-crushed leaves shed light on dusky woods and resins.

Yet this 2017 work is not your garden variety red geranium. Pelargonium graveolens, whose name means “sweet-scented,” yields one of the most versatile essences in perfumery. Distilled from the leaves of the plant rather than its flowers, this geranium has long been used as a fresh rosy note, hence its vernacular name, “rose geranium.”

Here, Feisthauer says, geranium is less fruity and more balsamic, almost incense-like, acting as the central motif of this intriguing composition. The perfumer starts by stretching a canvas of cool orris notes on a neat cedar-wood frame. Then she paints a dark, smoky background of vetiver Haiti, guaiac wood and moss. Shot through with glints of green cardamom, the golden light of Calabrian bergamot suffuses the scene, caught by richly textured ingredients that bring volume and contrast to the composition. The herbal sweetness of carrot enriches the orris accord; ambery clary sage suggests the softness of velvety leaves. Lemony, peppery, incense-like elemi resin enhances as a haze of musks smooths out its edges.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS PELARGONIUM has now been carefully transferred to a precious new vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

As it is worn, PELARGONIUM’s stately bouquet takes on a spare, abstract beauty, an evolving work of art that imparts its beauty freely on skin.

Notes:  Egyptian geranium, orris, cedar wood, vetiver, guaiac wood, moss, green cardamom, carrot seed, clary sage, elemi resin, musk

16a Orchard - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

Do you remember what it feels like when your life is about to change?

What about how it smells? AEDES DE VENUSTAS 16A marks a moment of rebirth, a skin scent that adapts to its wearer with revered, natural roots.

It was commissioned to celebrate AEDES PERFUMERY’s reinvention and move to 16A Orchard Street, on New York City’s “Lower" Lower East Side, a vibrant area that attracts a hip and diverse crowd, where galleries, skaters, cafes, and small, exclusive shops create crackling energy and excitement. In 2021, it has taken on a deeper meaning to AEDES DE VENUSTAS founders Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. “Every single soul went through a massive change in their lives,” says Gerstner. “During this time, we rooted here, in this neighborhood that represents the turnover of New York City. Unknowingly we have made something that is so much more important.”

Not just a smell, but a feeling. Something that is nurtured and then grows. “I aimed to create a sense of emotional wellbeing through a simplistic fragrance structure,”says perfumer Frank Voelkl. “The use of ingredients extracted from natural roots like ginger and iris tie us back to our earth, making us feel grounded and centered." But rather than recognizing a single note or fragrance category, 16A ORCHARD presents as a bit of a mystery. “You don’t know what to make of it right away, and that’s what makes it interesting,” says Gerstner. “You can’t put your finger on it. That’s also the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think —and live—outside the box.”

Earthly materials become airy in Voelkl’s hands. Ginger raises questions, throws you off course. Iris brings you back into focus as it reveals cold yet delicate qualities. Quince and muguet amplify the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy, dry roundness for more ephemeral notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom, and jasmine.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS 16A ORCHARD is presented in a precious vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

Notes: Ginger, iris, bergamot, lemon, cardamom, quince, jasmine, muguet, musk, suede, ambrox, tonka bean

Encens Japonais - Eau de Parfum

$ 5.00

An opulent and spicy perfume draws on the freshness of incense before it is burned.

The doors of a temple swing open. An intoxicating rush of ancient Japanese incense fills the air. It is rich and enveloping, yet it lifts as much as it grounds the spirit. This is the essence of ENCENS JAPONAIS.

A first whiff is a bit like looking through a keyhole: you think you know what you are viewing, but it is only upon further inspection that a full scene emerges. Instantly, a vivacious spiciness is present, a just-ground dusting of bracing pink pepper and black pepper with a touch of orange oil. But quickly other notes come to the fore: the Japanese incense entwined with the softness of leather. The balancing qualities of soft iris and rose. The sensuality of musk, the honeyed bitterness of strawflowers, and the voluptuous sweetness of precious woods draw you further into the depths of the temple.

While incense is immediately associated with depth and smoke, ENCENS JAPONAIS is a little-smelled riff on unburned incense. A freshly opened box, often smelled at AEDES PERFUMERY, has a peppery, fresh quality that dissipates when lit. The most high quality version comes from Japan.

AEDES DE VENUSTAS ENCENS JAPONAIS is presented in a precious vessel: A fluted glass bottle marked by peacock blue accents, a matte black insignia-stamped cap, and a sleek yet weighty design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story.

ENCENS JAPONAIS expands and contracts with the senses.

Notes: Incense, leather, musk, strawflowers, black and pink pepper, orange, iris, rose, opoponax, benzoin, coffee, patchouli, wood
